The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy. The broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrates how science, technology, art and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO – education, equality, and peace. Penny’s Light Seminar“ by Dr. Penny Hatziefstratiou Michelinaki, organises the fourth International Drawing Competition on the topic of light & lighting. This is an effort to make children realise the importance and use of light in our life. It is a celebration for the International Day of Light by UNESCO (16 May).

Please be informed that this Competition is now included in the official site of The International Day of Light www.lightday.org (Events- Greece and Events- Global).

The topic is “Light: Caring. Acting“.

Light is a renewable source of energy, which is replenished naturally. It plays an important role in meeting our everyday needs. On the other hand, artificial light is not always available or properly used. Light pollution is so crucial bringing changes to different levels. Children are asked to draw light and express how they care for it and how they can act for the benefit of all. Alternatively, children can show the opportunities that light offers, expressing the vision of UNESCO for equality, peace, and education for all.

Step 1 – Drawing

Think about the the role of light and the ways we use it. Do we really care about the use of light? Make a drawing on a white A4 paper (landscape). Each drawing must be the result of individual work. Children can use any drawing material they like (such a pencils or markers). They can also use collage, as long as this is integrated in the drawing, being a part of it, and not an independent piece of art.

Step 2 – Photo

Take a photo of your child’s drawing. Make sure it is well lit, without dark points or shadows. You must only include the drawing in the photo with no surroundings. Save as the photo with the child’s surname- name and year of birth.

Step 3 – Send the photo by email

Send the photo together with the requested information at pennyslightseminar@gmail.com. Submissions are allowed between February 2024 and April 1, 2024 (for non-Greek residents).
